Hours: 40 hours/wk, Mon. – Fri., 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Term: As soon as possible to approx. December 2017, may be extended

The County of Grande Prairie No. 1 is seeking a Utilities Officer for it’s Technical Services department. Reporting to the Technical Service Manager, the Utilities Officer’s duties include planning, organizing, operating, and maintaining the water treatment plants, water distribution systems, wastewater collection and wastewater treatment systems of the County of Grande Prairie.  


  • Minimum Grade 12 or GED equivalent;
  • Certification for Level 1 or Level 2 water/wastewater (or willingness to attain one as soon possible);
  • Water and Wastewater Technician Training, an asset;
  • H2S, First Aid, Trenching, Confined Space Entry, an asset;
  • Previous experience in municipal Water/Wastewater would be an asset;
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and acceptable driver’s abstract;
  • Must be able to perform duties to a high degree of quality, accuracy, timeliness and precision;
  • Effective communication skills and ability to understand oral and written instructions;
  • Above average critical thinking, troubleshooting and problem solving skills;
  • Apply troubleshooting ability to recognize problems and repair promptly with minimal supervision in accordance to Alberta Environment Code of Practice;
  • Ability to ensure all work related information is kept confidential as per policy and in accordance with Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act;
  • Ability to represent the County of Grande Prairie professionally at all times with coworkers, management, Council members and the public;
  • Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision;
  • Provide accurate and timely data for reporting water and wastewater Environmental Compliance reports;
  • Ability to comply with records management practices as stated in the Records Management Policy.

Working Environment/Conditions: 

  • The Utilities Officer duties require approximately 20 hours of travel time per week;
  • Overtime and standby often leads to working extended hours and/or working late nights and early mornings;
  • Demanding physical labour is required at times including bending, lifting and walking;
  • Daily work in an outdoor environment with extreme temperature conditions including heat, cold, dry, moisture, dirt and dust;
  • Exposure to wildlife and insects;
  • Hazardous chemicals are frequently handled;
  • Position involves working in confined spaces and in unsanitary conditions.
