Canuck Classic School Book

The Bear Lake Canuck Historical Society proudly announced the launch of their "Canuck Classic, a story of a Treasured one room School" book on July 26, 2014.

About the Book

Follow the story of the one-room country school from its beginnings in 1918 to its closure in 1955 and witness its remarkable restoration by a determined group of alumni. Their school, once the heart of the community, had become a mouse-infested granary in a farmer's field. The project to move and restore it as a centre with historical designation has taken nearly a quarter century at a cost in excess of $25,000. Examine the critical role that Canuck and other one-room schools played in Alberta from the turn of the century to their demise in the 1950's. Read the accounts by former students and teachers who share their memories supported by photographs, archival documents, drawings and more. Finally, learn about the present use of the school and plans for its future in the community.

Books are available for sale at the Sexsmith and Grande Prairie Museums.
