The County of Grande Prairie received notification that the Province has decided on the City of Grande Prairie's application for annexation. On January 1, 2016, 15,607 acres (6,316 hectares) of land will be annexed from the County to the City. See the Municipal Government Board's official annexation decision document [PDF - 5 MB] and the annexation boundary map [PDF - 546 KB] for more details.
“The County has always supported the City's need for growth and development and agreed to the land base requested by the City,” says Reeve Leanne Beaupre. “With the land currently in their boundaries, as well as the land acquired through this annexation, the City will have sufficient landmass to meet their growth needs for a minimum of 70 years.”
Beaupre adds that the County did not, however, agree with some of the conditions set out in the City's application, as these were not in the best interests of landowners.
“We're disappointed that many of the concerns of these landowners are not addressed in the Province's decision,” says Beaupre. “We can appreciate that those landowners impacted may feel uncertainty for what's ahead.”
The County has an information line to address ratepayers' questions, and County administration is working with City staff to help facilitate the transition of services.
Ratepayers with questions about the annexation are invited to contact Planning & Development Services at 780-513-3950.
