Member-At-Large Boards, Committees and Commissions

The County of Grande Prairie is recruiting public members for a variety of board, committee and commission positions to be filled this fall.

What do Boards, Committees and Commissions do?

 

Members review material, weigh alternatives, and make recommendations to Council which is then able to make more informed decisions while substantially expediting the decision-making process.

Some Boards, Committees and Commissions may also fill a quasi-judicial role. This means they have the authority to make decisions and judgments as provided for in the Municipal Government Act.

Representatives from the public to various Boards, Committees and Commissions are appointed by Council from a pool of applicants in accordance with Policy B30 Public Appointments to Boards and Committees [PDF - 294 KB].

Agricultural Service Board

Three Member-at-Large Positions Available

Term of Appointment

- One appointment for a term of one year, ending October 2021

- One appointment for a term of two years, ending October 2022

- One appointment for a term of three years ,ending October 2023

Purpose

To act as an advisory body to help organize and direct weed and pest control and soil and water conservation programs; to assist in the control of animal disease, promote, enhance and protect viable and sustainable agriculture with a view to improving the economic viability of the agricultural producer, and promote and develop agricultural policies to meet the needs of the municipality.

Time Commitment

Meetings are quarterly during office hours between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.  

 

For consideration to be appointed to the Agricultural Service Board (ASB), members-at-large must:

  • Be an active agricultural producer in the County of Grande Prairie;
  • Be familiar with current agricultural issues and practices; and,
  • Be deemed qualified by Council to recommend policies that are consistent with the requirements of the Agricultural Service Board Act.

The County strives to include members from differing sectors of the agriculture industry.

County Library Board

Three  Member-at-Large Positions Available

Term of Appointment

Three appointments for a term of three years, ending October 2023

 

Purpose

To ensure the provision of comprehensive and efficient library services to the residents of the County of Grande Prairie.

Time Commitment

Meetings are held quarterly with a minimum of four each year.

 

For consideration to be appointed to the County Library Board, members-at-large must:

  • Live in the County of Grande Prairie;
  • Have an interest and enthusiasm for libraries;
  • Have knowledge and skills that will benefit the board;
  • Have Board experience; and,
  • Work in a team.

Intermunicipal Subdivision and Development Appeal Board

Five Member-at-Large Positions Available

Term of Appointment

- One appointment for a term of one year, ending October 2021

- Two appointment for a term of two years, ending October 2022

- Two appointments for a term of three years, ending October 2023.

 

Purpose

Hears and makes decisions on appeals related to stop orders, developments and subdivisions for the County of Grande Prairie, towns of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith, Wembley and the Village of Hythe in accordance with the Municipal Government Act.

Time Commitment

Hearings are scheduled when complaints are received. Hearings are held during regular office hours between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

*Requires completion of mandatory certification to be paid for by the County of Grande Prairie.

For consideration to be appointed to the Intermunicipal Subdivision and Development Appeal Board members-at-large:

  • Should have experience or understanding of the principles of administrative law;
  • Understanding of the planning process and legislation;
  • Ability to analyze, weigh evidence, determine facts and make decisions;
  • Ability to be fair and impartial;
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and work within a team environment; and,
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable, committed and enthusiastic.

Joint Assessment Review Board

Three Member-at-Large Positions Available

Term of Appointment

- One appointment for a term of one year ending, October 2021

- One appointment for a term of two years ending, October 2022

- One appointment for a term of three years, ending October 2023.

 

Purpose

The Board issues decisions on complaints related to property assessments within the County of Grande Prairie; towns of Wembley, Sexsmith and Beaverlodge; and the Village of Hythe.

Time Commitment

Hearings are scheduled when complaints are received, typically in late fall. Hearings take place during regular office hours between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

*Requires completion of mandatory certification to be paid for by the County of Grande Prairie.

For consideration to be appointed to the Joint Assessment Review Board, members-at-large:

  • Should have experience or understanding of the principles of administrative law;
  • Experience or interest in one or more of the following areas: real estate, property management, property development, property appraisal, and assessment;
  • Ability to analyze, weigh evidence, determine facts and make decisions;
  • Ability to be fair and impartial;
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and work within a team environment; and
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable, committed and enthusiastic.

County Recreation Boards

25 Member-at-Large Positions Available

County – Wembley – Dimsdale – Saskatoon Lake Recreation Board (four members)

County – Grande Prairie Recreation Board (four members)

Term of Appointment

Appointments to be staggered on each board to ensure continuity.

 

Purpose

To review grant applications and make recommendations to County Council for those organizations and groups who are to receive Operating Assistance Grant funding.  

Time Commitment

Recreation boards meet annually for one full day during the first two weeks of May during regular office hours between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

 

For consideration to be appointed to a County Recreation Board:

  • Resident of the Recreation Board area;
  • Experience or interest in one or more of the following areas: non-profit organizations and community sports and recreation;
  • Ability to be fair and open-minded;
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and work within a team environment; and
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable, committed and enthusiastic.

Historic Resource Committee

Two Member-at-Large Positions Available

Term of Appointment

Two appointments with a term of two years, ending October 2022

 

Purpose

To oversee developments with respect to the identification of historic resources within the County of Grande Prairie and make recommendations for their designation as Municipal or Provincial resources to County Council.  

Time Commitment

Meetings take place as needed during regular office hours between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

 

For consideration to be appointed to the Historic Resource Committee members-at-large must possess:

  • Experience or interest in one or more of the following areas:
    • history of the County of Grande Prairie
    • preserving the historic resources of the County of Grande Prairie
    • Ability to communicate effectively and work within a team environment; and,
    • Ability to be flexible, adaptable, committed and enthusiastic.

Agricultural Appeal Committee

Purpose

To hear and determine appeals of inspector’s notices, local authority’s notices and debt recover notices.    

Time Commitment

Meetings take place as needed during regular office hours between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

  • Familiarity with current agricultural issues and practices;
  • Ability to fair and impartial;
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work within a team environment; and,
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable, committed and enthusiastic.
