The County of Grande Prairie uses a biobed to dispose of herbicide rinsate from its weed control program.

What is a biobed?

Biobeds are a disposal system used to degrade pesticide rinsate. They are environmentally friendly and easy to use.

How is a biobed made?

An organic mixture of:

  • 2 parts straw
  • 1 part topsoil
  • 1 part compost

The organic mix creates an ideal habitat for microbes to breakdown the herbicide rinsate. The mixture is placed in a lined pit to ensure there is no offsite contamination.
