Do I require a permit to purchase fireworks?

Do I require a permit for my to set off fireworks?

Yes. A permit is required for anyone planning a fireworks display. You do not need a permit for hand-held sparklers or caps for toy guns if they are the only novelty being set off.

Sparkler safety

• Sparklers burn extremely hot. You should never touch the sparkler except by its handle.
• Never touch another person's clothing with an ignited sparkler.
• Keep sparklers away from people's faces and hair.
• After a sparkler has finished burning, it remains extremely hot! You should put sparklers in a pail of water once they are finished burning to cool them before disposing of them safely. 

How much does a fireworks permit cost?

There is no charge for a Consumer Fireworks Display Permit.

What information do I need to provide for the permit application?

To apply for a permit you need:

• Any legal identification that has the applicant's name on it (such as a birth certificate or driver's license with current address)
• If you are not the owner of the property, a written consent form is required.

We recommend you apply for your permit well in advance of holiday weekends to avoid any possible delays because of increased demand.

Do I still require a permit to display my fireworks if I purchased them in another municipality?

Yes. It doesn't matter where you purchase your fireworks, you must get a fireworks display permit from the fire department to set them off anywhere in the County of Grande Prairie.

How old do I have to be to get a permit or to purchase fireworks?

You must be at least 18 years of age to obtain a Fireworks Display Permit or purchase fireworks. 

Where can I set off my fireworks?

Most residential properties will not be able to meet the clearance requirements for setting off fireworks. 

Important safety notes:

• Fireworks should only be used outdoors away from buildings, vehicles or any other structure that may cause damage or injure people. 
• Fireworks cannot be set off on public property (such as highways, streets, squares or parks unless otherwise permitted by the Fire Prevention Bylaw).
• Fire "crackers" are strictly prohibited.
• Spectators should maintain a safe distance (recommended minimum 20 m or 65 feet) from where fireworks are being set off.

Is an inspection of my display site required?

Not necessarily. In some situations where clearances to combustible materials or buildings are questionable, an inspection may be conducted by the Fire Department to determine if the site is suitable for a fireworks display.

What clearances to combustible structures are required?

Your firing base (e.g. mound or non-combustible pail of sand or earth) must be a minimum of 20 m (65 feet) away for fountains or other ground-based items from the nearest building. Roman candles require a minimum clearance of 30 m x 30 m (approximately 100 feet x 100 feet).

Other safety tips:

• Make sure there are no overhead wires, branches or other obstructions when setting up your display.
• Keep a metal pail or other suitable container partly filled with water to dispose of fireworks.

What if I don't own the property?

If you do not own the property where the fireworks display will be set off, you need to provide written consent from the property owner when you apply for your permit. 

Fireworks cannot be set off on public property (land owned by the County) without permission. Contact the Fire Marshal for more information.

How do I prepare for my display?

1. It is important to start by reading and following the manufacturer's instructions on all fireworks.
2. Plan the order you will set off the fireworks in before you begin.
3. Make a firing base (e.g. mound of sand or earth) from which to set off your fireworks.
4. Bury all long fireworks at least halfway down into the firing base.
5. Light all fireworks at arm's length, standing back and keeping your face turned away. Preferably use an “igniter stick” to set off your fireworks.
6. Light carefully, and always light the fuse at its tip. Remember to protect your eyes with safety glasses or safety goggles!
7. Have a pail of water or garden hose connected to a water supply within arms reach to be used as a fire extinguisher if necessary.
8. Do not set off fireworks when it is windy

Fireworks should always be stored in a cool, dry, ventilated place in a locked container, away from children.
