Alde Family Recognized as the County's 2025 Farm Family of the Year
The County of Grande Prairie recognizes Kreg and Lee-Anne Alde, owners of Broken Tine Orchard, as the 2025 Farm Family of the Year. This fourth-generation farm has evolved over nearly a century, blending history and innovation with a steadfast commitment to agriculture, sustainability, and community.
The farm was established in 1927 by Kreg’s great-grandparents, William and Alice Alde, with a focus on livestock and wheat. Kreg's grandparents, Hugh and Ilene Alde, pushed the farm forward through hard work and perseverance to establish a healthy operation. Kreg's parents, Wayne and Colleen, evolved the farm from mainly a hog operation into crop production, grew the farmland acreage, and developed excellent farming practices. In 2015, Kreg and Lee-Anne officially took over the farm as Monkman Ventures, continuing the family's legacy alongside their children, Nevada and Konnor, with an eye on value added with berry production and Broken Tine Orchard.
Today, the 2,400-acre operation produces wheat, canola, barley, and a 30-acre haskap berry orchard containing 20,000 plants. Broken Tine has expanded into value added processing, using haskap berries to create wine, mead, and Fricey's Prairie Fruit Pops. They have also collaborated with brands like Foothills Creamery to develop unique products such as prairie berry ice cream. Their dedication to quality and innovation has earned them numerous industry awards, including the Top Dairy Product in Alberta for Fricey's Prairie Fruit Pops, the Fields to Forks 2024 Award, and multiple fruit wine awards.
"Our farm is more than a business; it's a way of life built on family, tradition, and hard work," says Kreg Alde. "Family farms face challenges, so having the County recognize our way of life means a great deal. When you support your community, it supports you in return."
The Aldes prioritize sustainable practices, including regenerative agriculture, a farming method aimed to improve soil and environment health, and conservation-focused land management.
"The Alde family's dedication to agriculture, sustainability, and community leadership is inspiring," says Councillor Bob Chrenek, Agricultural Services Board Chair. "Their commitment to an enhanced business model demonstrates how farm families can adapt and evolve while continuing to grow and innovate. We proudly recognize their contributions as the 2025 Farm Family of the Year."
Outside of their farm, the Aldes are actively involved in their community, supporting service groups, local sports, tourism, and agricultural initiatives while also advocating for value-added farming throughout Alberta.
The Alde family will be honoured at the County’s annual Farm Family Banquet during the Peace Country Classic Agri-Show on March 7, 2025. Tickets are available through the County Agriculture Department at 780-532-9727. Learn more at www.countygp.ab.ca/farmfamily.
