Amended Fire Services Agreement between County of Grande Prairie and Town of Wembley
Renewed Recreation Agreement, Amended Fire Services Agreement between County of Grande Prairie and Town of Wembley Continues Municipal Collaboration Commitment
In a cooperative effort to share costs for mutually beneficial recreational and fire services, the County of Grande Prairie and the Town of Wembley have finalized two official agreements. These agreements outline joint funding and support for various recreational and fire services in both communities for the coming years, including funding arrangements for green spaces and public parks, recreational programming, and the Wembley Arena (Agricultural Society).
The Municipal Government Act requires that municipalities sharing a common boundary must create an Intermunicipal Cooperation Framework (ICF) agreement for services that benefit both parties. Through collaborative discussions, the County of Grande Prairie has successfully completed all required agreements with its neighbouring municipalities. The recently signed recreation renewal agreement and the amended fire agreement continue a relationship that fosters recreational opportunities and public safety for residents of both the County of Grande Prairie and the Town of Wembley.
“Our renewed agreements with the Town of Wembley are a testament to the power of collaboration in serving our communities,” said County of Grande Prairie Reeve Bob Marshall. “By working together on recreational and fire services, we are not only sharing resources but also building a stronger, more connected region. This partnership embodies our Council’s strategic priorities to be a strong partner in developing inter-municipal relationships and fostering community wellness and safety. Together, we are paving the way for a brighter future for all our residents.”
Town of Wembley Mayor Kelly Peterson said, “The renewed agreements between the County of Grande Prairie and the Town of Wembley represent a significant milestone in our commitment to collaboration. By jointly investing in recreational and fire services, we are not only enhancing the quality of life for our residents but also ensuring our communities thrive together.”
The renegotiated recreation agreement outlines funding the County of Grande Prairie will provide to the Town of Wembley from 2024 to 2028. The amended fire agreement reduces the administrative fees payable by the Town of Wembley to the County of Grande Prairie in 2025 and 2026.
