Back to SearchIce resurfacing at the Crosslink County Sportsplex has become safer, more efficient and cost effective.
The County has added a new electric Zamboni to its fleet, thanks to funding from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC). Replacing one of the older propane ice resurfacers with a zero-emission electric model allows the County to reduce carbon emissions in the facility and provide a quieter, healthier and safer facility for patrons and staff members.
The County received an Electric Vehicles for Municipalities (EVM) grant for 30 per cent of the purchase price of the Zamboni 450 Electric Ice Resurfacer from the MCCAC. The approximate cost of the new unit is $153,750.
“By electrifying their ice resurfacer through the Electric Vehicles for Municipalities Program, the County of Grande Prairie is showing leadership on climate action by reducing greenhouse gas emissions in their arena," says Trina Innes, Executive Director, Sustainability Services, Alberta Municipalities.
“The County is pleased to reduce its carbon footprint and is grateful for the grant funding to help us make this transition to an electric option for our new ice resurfacing machine,” says Deputy Reeve Peter Harris.
Now that hockey season is back in full swing, staff at the Sportsplex are enjoying using the new Zamboni. The Zamboni’s lithium-ion battery can provide a constant level of power with no reduction in performance. A flood uses approximately 10-15 per cent of the battery’s capacity and recharging can easily be completed between ice resurfacings.
Over the lifespan of the electric Zamboni, the County expects to see additional cost savings with a reduction in fossil fuels and lower maintenance costs due to the longer life expectancy of the lithium-ion battery.
