County Regional Fire Service and Wembley Fire Department, supported by other area crews are responding to a growing grass fire located south of Huallen, near Township Road 711 and Range Road 92.

Firefighters from the Clairmont and Hythe stations and Beaverlodge and Wembley fire departments, as well as an Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AAF) helicopter, are currently on scene working to control the blaze.

Officials are directing the public to avoid the area and give the right of way to emergency vehicles as they travel to the scene. Smoke will be visible in the area and may spread due to high winds.

The fire is suspected to have been caused by a rock strike during harvesting. Producers are reminded to exercise caution when working in these dry conditions, and to be prepared with a fire extinguisher and water source available to extinguish small fires if they occur. The wildfire risk across the region remains very high.

Fire restrictions are in place in the County of Grande Prairie and surrounding communities, meaning only permitted recreational fire pits and campfires are allowed. Residents are asked to exercise caution and burn only when necessary. Burning is not permitted when winds reach 12 km per hour or higher.

A fire ban may be imposed if the extreme conditions continue.
