Fire Crews Responding to Brush Fire in Wembley Area
Crews from Wembley, Sexsmith and Clairmont are currently working to extinguish a brush fire near Highway 724 and Township Road 720 that was started by a recreational fire pit.
Sparks spread from the fire pit to nearby grass. Given the current windy conditions, the fire quickly spread to outbuildings causing minor damage before moving into a wooded area.
County Fire Chief Trevor Grant says this is the earliest grass/brush fire of this size on record in the County. The County currently has a Fire Advisory in place and will not be issuing any new permits until conditions improve.
Residents are asked to follow the conditions of their permit, exercise caution when burning, and to immediately extinguish burn piles when winds reach 12km per hour.
As an added precaution, residents are also reminded to regularly review all current fire restrictions and bans in place across the province at www.albertafirebans.ca.
