Shortly after noon on Monday, June 7, County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service responded to a call for a large animal rescue.

Upon arrival, crews discovered a cow that had slid down a muddy embankment and was unable to climb out. The Technical Large Animal Rescue team based out of the La Glace fire station was called to respond, with help from the Teepee Creek fire station, Sexsmith Fire Department and the animal’s owner.

With specialized training and equipment, crews were able to place slings underneath the cow, create a path and slide the animal up the ravine without further injury. The cow was successfully removed after a few hours and is doing well after its rescue.

County Council has invested in Technical Large Animal Rescue expertise at the La Glace fire station, including regular training and equipment suited to these types of calls for service.

Residents are encouraged to regularly survey their property and take steps to secure potentially dangerous locations to ensure livestock safety.
