Take-All Root Rot

Take-All Root Rot is a disease caused by a fungus that affects the root growth of the wheat plant. The plant may be attacked during any point of the growing season and can suffer major damage as a result.

How Does it Spread?

Crop residue is the main source of infection, but it can also be spread by airborne spores. Root to root transfer will also occur when the fungus gets established and the right soil conditions are present.

Prevention

Like most of the other diseases of wheat, Take-All can be controlled by using basic precautions to reduce its establishment and spread:

  • Practice crop rotations using non-host species in alternate years;
  • Maintain balanced fertility levels;
  • Apply registered seed treatment at specified rates; and
  • Sow cleaned, certified seed.
