Firstly, the County has no way to track when rented land changes renters. Secondly, as crops grown on a quarter change from year to year, so will the weed management plan, thus the need to register each year.
Register Your Weed Management Plan
The Weed Control Plan Registration Program was developed to better align weed inspection activities with on-farm realities. Farmers often have planned windows for weed control based on seeding schedules, crop stage, and weather conditions. In the past, inspections sometimes occurred before these planned control measures could take place, resulting in unnecessary follow-up and frustration.
This program gives landowners and renters the opportunity to share their weed management plans in advance, allowing the County to better understand when and how weeds will be addressed. By registering a plan, producers can help reduce unnecessary communication, while supporting a more efficient and cooperative approach to weed management.
Registered Plans Must:
- Include all lands covered under the plan
-
List all crops and the weed control methods for each, including timing
-
Be submitted annually
Registration is Completed online
Applicants may also print and submit a paper form, or contact the Agriculture Department at 780-532-9727 to have staff enter the information on their behalf.
Registering a weed control plan allows landowners and renters to customize weed management strategies for their operation, while enabling the County to focus resources on lands without a registered plan. Weed Inspectors will review the management database and will only contact agricultural producers who do not have a plan on file.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Why do I have to update my rented lands or weed management plan yearly?
Will the landowner be contacted when I register my plan?
Yes, the landowner will be notified that their renter has registered a weed management plan with the County.
What happens if I don't follow my plan?
If there is no reasonable explanation for the plan not being followed (eg: too wet, too dry etc), the Agricultural Fieldman will contact the producer to discuss what is happening. Each case will be reviewed by the Fieldman, and every effort will be made to work with the producer. You can also call the office to register changes if needed.
