2026 Road Construction Season Underway
2026 Road Construction Season Underway
The County of Grande Prairie’s road construction season is in full swing, with crews hard at work tackling a busy schedule of nearly 40 projects. Construction season typically runs from May till November, depending on weather conditions.
Roads and road safety continue to be a key priority for County residents. Findings from the 2025 Citizen Satisfaction Survey showed that road conditions and road maintenance remain a top concern; road infrastructure is one of the most visible ways residents see value from their tax dollars. Council considered this feedback when approving the 2026 Final Budget, which allocated $51.7 million for road improvements with approximately 68.5 per cent of the capital budget directed to road and bridge projects.
“Work is planned across the County to ensure road improvements benefit residents and regional transportation needs,” says Ryan Konowalyk, the County’s General Manager of Transportation and Utilities. “Motorists can expect to encounter a range of activities, from grading our extensive gravel road network, to paving, culvert work, and bridge projects.”
Grading
Grading improves existing gravel roads by reshaping the road surface and adjacent ditches to create a smooth, durable driving surface with proper sloping for drainage and effective water management along roadways.
In 2026, 15 grading projects are scheduled on nearly 70 km of roads, including:
- Range Road 125 between Township Roads 732 and 742 (Project Code C10554)
- Range Road 110 and Township Road 733 (Project Code C10540)
- Range Road 83 (Project Code C10442-1011)
Base Pave
Base paving prepares roads for a new paved surface by repairing weak areas and strengthening the road structure before asphalt is applied. This process creates a durable, hard surfaced road with an expected lifespan of 15-20 years. Some of this year’s base pave projects include:
- Township Road 744 (Project Code 10408) and Range Road 50 (Project Code C10541)
- Range Road 53, south of Township Road 712 (Project Code C10409)
- Range Road 92 and Township Road 730 (Project Code C10524)
Paved Road Rehabilitation
Paved road maintenance includes overlays, seal coats, and micro-surfacing. These improvements address potholes, rutting, cracking, and areas with underground utilities that have settled over time. Some paved road maintenance projects scheduled for 2026 include:
- Range Road 82 between Township Road 702 and 713 (Project Code C10620)
- Township Road 712 and Range Road 51 (Project Code C10734)
- Township Road 714 between Highway 722 and Range Road 103 (Project Code C10719)
Bridges & Large Culverts
Bridge construction can include a full bridge replacement, minor repairs and rehabilitation, and/or replacing large culverts. Three bridge projects are scheduled for 2026:
- Range Road 80 (Project C10706)
- Range Road 114 (Project Code C10707)
- Range Road 132 (Project Code C10709)
Seasonal Road Maintenance
Many smaller-scale road projects take place during favourable weather. Ongoing maintenance helps extend the life of the County’s roads and infrastructure. These projects include pothole repairs, crack sealing, line painting, roadside and ditch mowing, weed spraying, sign maintenance, bridge and street cleaning, and applying dust control.
A detailed list of projects and a coded interactive construction map are available at www.countygp.ab.ca/roadconstruction. When a construction project is about to begin, project details and potential traffic impacts are shared through the County’s Facebook page and Voyent Alert.
