County Council Approves 2026-2027 Advocacy Priorities
The County of Grande Prairie has approved its 2026-2027 Advocacy Priorities, which will guide Council's advocacy efforts over the coming year.
County Council approved the three priority areas of electricity distribution disparity, Highway 40X, and healthcare support.
“Council reviews its advocacy priorities annually to ensure residents' interests and objectives continue to be advanced to other levels of government,” said County Reeve Amanda McDonald. “Our priorities are key to ensuring quality of life and have been strategically selected to address infrastructure needs and the urgent health care and economic challenges facing residents and businesses across our region.”
Council will focus on lobbying the Province to adopt a new electricity distribution pricing model that eliminates pricing disparities across Alberta, particularly in northern communities where residents and businesses face significantly higher rates.
Council is also urging the Province to prioritize and allocate capital funding for the construction of Highway 40X, creating a vital connection between Highway 40 and Highway 43. The project would improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and strengthen economic supply chains throughout the region and Alberta.
Healthcare support remains a key priority through Council's support of Maskwa Medical Center’s advocacy for approval of an Alternative Relationship Plan for its specialized diagnostic clinic, as well as advocating for the Province to establish a catheterization lab at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital.
Additional advocacy priorities include:
- Supporting Northwestern Polytechnic’s efforts to expand skilled trades programming in Grande Prairie through the development of the Northern Edge Technology Centre.
- Advocating the Province and Federal governments for additional weather stations throughout the County.
- Seeking increased provincial funding for core infrastructure including roads, bridges, and utilities.
- Advocating for no further increases to the municipal share of policing costs.
- Requesting increased funding for provincial road maintenance and a review of secondary highway classification in the Grande Prairie region.
