County of Grande Prairie Advances FireSmart™ Initiatives with Wildfire Mitigation Work

The County of Grande Prairie is taking another proactive step to enhance the safety of residents, infrastructure, and natural spaces through upcoming wildfire mitigation work planned for the Wapiti Nordic area between January 19 and March 31, 2026.

Wapiti Nordic trail users can expect some temporary closures of affected trails while the work is completed.

As part of the County’s ongoing Wildfire Mitigation Strategy, crews will treat nearly 17 hectares of public forested land. This work focuses on reducing natural fuel sources, an important measure that helps slow wildfire spread.

“Our goal is to create safer, more resilient communities,” says County Regional Fire Service Chief, Trevor Grant. “This work not only reduces wildfire risk, but also strengthens the long-term health of our forested areas.”

Planned FireSmart Work

Mitigation activities are guided by FireSmart principles and will include:

  • tree thinning and pruning
  • harvesting select timber
  • removing deadfall
  • mulching debris

Residents and trail users may see equipment and increased activity in the area, including log hauling, near Range Road 63 south of Township Road 704 and along Township Road 704.

About the Work Areas

Treatment Areas 2 & 3 – Work is scheduled to begin January 19, weather permitting. Both areas are located on public land leased for recreational use by the Wapiti Ski Club. Users should expect brief, rotating closures while crews complete vegetation management.

Treatment Area 4 – Work is scheduled to begin January 26, weather permitting. This 5.19‑hectare site will serve as a long‑term fireguard to enhance wildfire protection for Deer Ridge Estates and surrounding areas. Once completed, the fireguard will be naturally maintained by cattle grazing, preventing the re‑growth of dense vegetation.
