County of Grande Prairie and Town of Sexsmith renew partnership to support community facilities
(County of Grande Prairie, Alberta) – Whether it’s skating at the arena, a curling game, or a community event at the hall, residents of the County of Grande Prairie and the Town of Sexsmith will continue to enjoy the local facilities they value most thanks to a renewed cost-sharing agreement between the two municipalities.
The new Community Services Agreement, effective January 1, 2026, outlines how the two municipalities will share costs to maintain and operate Sexsmith’s community facilities. The partnership supports key amenities such as the arena, curling rink, civic centre, community centre and public parks, ensuring they remain accessible and welcoming for residents from both communities.
“The Town of Sexsmith and the County have a long history of working together. This renewed agreement keeps that cooperation going,” said Reeve Bob Marshall, County of Grande Prairie. “When we share costs, we make sure residents have access to local facilities without duplicating what already works.”
Under the renewed agreement, the County will provide $147,702 in funding to the Town of Sexsmith in 2026, with a 2.5 percent increase each year for the term of the agreement. The County will also contribute toward key facility improvements, including annual maintenance at the arena and future upgrades at the community and civic centres.
“This agreement formalizes a history of cooperation we have enjoyed as municipal partners,” said Mayor Kate Potter, Town of Sexsmith. “We know that residents don't stay within their own municipal boundaries when looking for recreation or services. This agreement helps ensure an excellent quality of life for all our residents, regardless of which community they call home.”
The agreement aligns with Alberta’s Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework legislation, which requires neighbouring municipalities to collaborate to provide residents with services efficiently and fairly.
