Highway 40 Twinning Project Completed South of Grande Prairie
Grande Prairie, AB – The MD of Greenview and the County of Grande Prairie, with the support of the City of Grande Prairie, joined Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors Devin Dreeshen, MLA for Grande Prairie-Wapiti Ron Wiebe, and MLA for Grande Prairie Nolan Dyck, today for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Highway 40 twinning project south of Grande Prairie. This provincially led infrastructure initiative, supported by local municipalities, enhances safety, reduces congestion, and fosters economic growth for both industry and communities across the region.
“Highway 40 is a vital economic corridor that connects families, workers, and industry across northern Alberta. Our government committed $168 million to complete this twinning project which sees a daily traffic count of 4,300 vehicles per day. Investments like this strengthen our province’s transportation network and keep Alberta’s communities connected for decades to come.”
Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors
To accelerate this project, the MD of Greenview and the County of Grande Prairie worked collaboratively to approve a historical cost-sharing agreement with Alberta’s government in 2020. The project involved twinning approximately 19 kilometres of Highway 40, including the construction of a new Wapiti River Bridge with a pedestrian underpass, intersection improvements, LED lighting, and traffic signals. These upgrades will improve traffic flow and reduce collision risks on one of Alberta’s busiest industrial corridors.
“I’m proud to see the Highway 40 twinning project completed. This investment will make travel safer and more efficient for countless people, while reinforcing Grande Prairie’s reputation as an economic powerhouse in Alberta. This is a major milestone for the region and a clear example of what different levels of government working together can achieve.”
Ron Wiebe, MLA for Grande Prairie-Wapiti
“Grande Prairie has long been the economic centre of northwestern Alberta, and the completion of the Highway 40 twinning project will only strengthen that position. These improvements will make travel safer and better connect local businesses to the rest of Alberta. I’m excited to see this investment make a lasting impact in our community.”
Nolan Dyck, MLA for Grande Prairie
This collaboration demonstrates the commitment of the province, regional municipalities, and our efforts to attract investment, leverage resources, and create opportunities for businesses and residents.
“Greenview is proud to have contributed $50 million toward the Highway 40 twinning project. This investment reflects our commitment to improving safety for all road users while supporting industrial development and strengthening the regional economy. By partnering on this critical infrastructure, we’re helping ensure northwestern Alberta remains a safe, efficient, and prosperous place to live and work.”
Ryan Ratzlaff, Reeve of MD of Greenview
“Thousands of people travel this section of Highway 40 daily. It is an important economic artery that connects industries and people throughout our region. The County of Grande Prairie is proud to have contributed $10 million to this project. These improvements will have a profound impact on our economy and improve safety for travellers for years to come.”
Amanda McDonald, Reeve, County of Grande Prairie
“Highway 40 is a vital corridor for the families, workers, and industries that power the Northwest. When we strengthen access for the movement of goods, we strengthen Alberta. Investing in the twinning of this route supports our region’s growth and reinforces the role northwestern Alberta plays in driving the province forward.”
