Update #34: Wildfire Progress Continues; County Fire Restriction to Replace Ban June 18

Update #34: Wildfire Progress Continues; County Fire Restriction to Replace Ban June 18

Tuesday, June 17, 2025, 3:00 p.m.–   Continued progress is being made on the Kiskatinaw River Wildfire, thanks to continued cooler weather and precipitation in the forecast. Despite these favourable conditions, the wildfire remains out of control and continues to pose a potential risk to nearby areas.

An evacuation alert remains in place for everyone north of Township Road 710 to 740, east of the British Columbia/Alberta border to Range Road 132.

Effective at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, the County of Grande Prairie will downgrade the Fire Ban to a Fire Restriction, for entire County, including the Towns of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith, and Wembley. Recent rainfall and cooler temperatures have lowered wildfire danger in the region, with the Grande Prairie Forest Area now rated moderate. The County will continue to monitor weather conditions and wildfire risk in the coming days and adjust the restriction level as needed. In the meantime, residents are urged to remain cautious and follow all fire safety guidelines.

Weather and Fire Behaviour

Fire activity remains low and mostly smouldering. Winds up to 20 km/h are expected from the southwest, with highs of 19–24°C and moderate humidity. A weak system may bring isolated showers or thundershowers this afternoon. Longer-term forecasts suggest warmer, drying conditions. Smoke may still be visible. Please call 911 if you see any open flame.

Operations Update

Crews continue targeting hotspots, especially near Kelly Lake, supported by infrared scanning. Direct fire suppression continues from Campbell Lake to the Alberta border, with heavy equipment building guard along the fire’s southern edge. Tree clearing and mop-up assessments are underway along key roads. Structure protection is wrapping up, and a rehab specialist is now assessing areas no longer in active use. BC Wildfire is conducting air patrols throughout the day. No heavy equipment is currently operating on the Alberta side.
