Update #8: Updated size for wildfire southwest of Kelly Lake; Evacuation Alert Remains

Monday, June 2, 2025, 4:15p.m. – The Kiskatinaw River wildfire (G70422), burning southwest of Kelly Lake in British Columbia (BC), grew Sunday afternoon, but has not moved any closer to the Alberta border. BC Wildfire Service updated the size of the fire to 3,901 hectares from 3,043 hectares.

Today, planned ignitions will be conducted along the north and south sides of the fire, which may result in increased smoke in surrounding areas. These ignitions are being done to help secure containment lines and prevent the fire from spreading further when weather conditions change.

High temperatures and wind are expected to make firefighting efforts challenging; however, proactive planning continues with Alberta Wildfire and the County of Grande Prairie.

Access to wildfire area closed at the border

County Regional Fire Service would like to remind the public to stay clear of the area and allow crews to conduct their work. A staffed checkpoint is in place with barricades at the border and RCMP are patrolling the evacuation area.

Wildfire evacuation alert remains in effect

The wildfire evacuation alert issued by the County of Grande Prairie remains in place for residents located north of Township Road 720 to Township Road 732, east of the BC/Alberta border to Range Road 130. No evacuation is required at this time. If an evacuation order is issued, residents will have 30 minutes to evacuate.

Grande Prairie Forest Area - High wildfire danger

The wildfire danger in the Grande Prairie Forest Area is currently high. Current conditions make it easy for wildfires to start and spread quickly. Use extra caution while outdoors—just one small spark can lead to a wildfire.

Where to find updates

The next update will be coordinated with any information released by the Peace River Regional District.
