Wildfire Mitigation Strategy Highlights County’s Commitment to Reducing Wildfire Risk

The County of Grande Prairie is doubling down on wildfire prevention with the launch of its updated 2025 Wildfire Mitigation Strategy. The strategy focuses on practical measures residents, landowners, and businesses can take to reduce wildfire risk across the County.

“Protecting our communities from wildfire is a shared responsibility,” says Reeve Bob Marshall. “By working together, we strengthen our ability to safeguard the people, property, and landscapes that make our region unique.”

Key elements of the 2025 strategy include:

  • Fuel Management: continued FireSmart™  treatments and fuel reduction efforts in high-risk areas, especially the Wapiti Dunes region.

  • Community Preparedness: enhanced collaboration with residents, businesses, and industry partners to improve prevention, readiness, and response.

  • Public Education: expanded outreach through workshops, trade shows and open houses to promote FireSmart principles and wildfire prevention.

Background:

The County of Grande Prairie has been actively working to reduce wildfire risk since the launch of its first Wildfire Mitigation Strategy in 2015. Over the past decade, the County has worked closely with Alberta Forestry and Parks (formerly Alberta Agriculture and Forestry), the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA), as well as residents, private landowners, and businesses to implement fire fuel reduction, public education, and community engagement projects in high-risk areas, such as the Wapiti Dunes.

The 2025 Wildfire Mitigation Strategy is an actionable, community-focused plan. It provides ways residents, businesses, and private landowners can get involved with fire prevention—such as implementing FireSmart principles around properties and registering in the Livestock Emergency Response Plan.
