County Hosts Free FireSmart Wood Chipping Events to Help Reduce Wildfire Risk
County Hosts Free FireSmart™ Wood Chipping Events to Help Reduce Wildfire Risk
The County of Grande Prairie is hosting two free FireSmart™ Wood Chipping events to support ongoing wildfire prevention efforts as part of the updated 2025 Wildfire Mitigation Strategy. These events help reduce fire-prone materials, such as trees, branches, brush, and deadfall, on private properties, particularly in high-risk subdivisions, and contribute to the County’s broader goals of risk reduction and community protection.
Event Details:
The Ranch Subdivision
Saturday, June 28, 2025
9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Access via Township Road 704, just west of Range Road 64. Turn south at “The Ranch” subdivision sign, take the first right and then the first left. The wood chipping site is at the end of the cul-de-sac.
Aspen Ridge Subdivision
Saturday, July 12, 2025
9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Enter at Range Road 51 and Township Road 713, head east and take the first right (paved road). Follow the road—wood chipping is in the first cul-de-sac on your left.
“Wildfires pose a serious threat to properties in forested and grassy subdivisions,” says County Fire Prevention Officer Kurt Schleiter. “These events are a practical way for residents to get involved in reducing wildfire risks while learning about the FireSmart principles that protect their homes and communities.”
Residents are encouraged to bring trees they’ve cut down, within chipper capacity, as well as trees, branches, brush, and deadfall for free on-site chipping. At the June 28 event in the Ranch Subdivision, the chipper can handle material up to 12–14 inches in diameter. At the July 12 event in the Aspen Ridge Subdivision, the chipper can handle material up to 12 inches in diameter. Construction wood, nails, stumps, and excessively muddy material will not be accepted.
Attendees can enjoy a free barbeque with hot dogs and refreshments, courtesy of the County Regional Fire Service. Crews will also be onsite to provide information and answer any questions.
Chipping services will be provided by Jarvis Tree Services and Aurora Tree and Vegetation.
The updated 2025 Wildfire Mitigation Strategy will be released to the public later this year. For more information on the event and FireSmart visit www.countygp.ab.ca/firesmart
