County of Grande Prairie Adopts New Municipal Development Plan

County of Grande Prairie Adopts New Municipal Development Plan

The County of Grande Prairie adopted its new Municipal Development Plan (MDP) during today’s Special Council Meeting, following a public hearing on March 9, 2026.

The updated plan reflects extensive public feedback between 2023 and 2025 and is part of the overarching Plan Your County project.

The new MDP balances the needs of the County’s diverse communities, ranging from rural to urban, and outlines sustainable growth and development. As the County’s primary planning policy, it guides future development and informs other documents such as the Land Use Bylaw (LUB) and Area Structure Plans (ASPs).

Public engagement included 27 in-person and two virtual information sessions, five school visits, a technical workshop, and online feedback opportunities.

“We would like to thank residents for their participation in this important project,” says Reed Desroches, Director of Planning Services at the County. “Their feedback shaped the plan and ensures the County is growing in a way that aligns with the vision residents have for our County. The MPD provides a strong foundation for long-term planning across the County and future policy and plan updates.”

The new MDP replaces the previous plan and serves as the framework for land uses, expansion, and future development areas in hamlets and across the County. It identifies areas for growth and expansion with efficient uses of existing infrastructure and areas that need to be protected, supporting sustainable growth that will meet the County’s needs for the next 50 years.
