Recycling

The County of Grande Prairie No. 1’s recycling program is now managed by Circular Materials, a national not-for-profit organization that is committed to building an efficient and effective recycling system in Alberta. Click here to visit Circular Materials’ website.

Please direct all residential inquiries to our collection contractor, Prairie Disposal, at 780-539-5950 or dispatch@prairiedisposal.com.
Waste management involves eliminating or reducing waste at the source. The long-term health of the environment and the life of the landfills depend on us.  You can participate by using the following methods:
  • Reduce - Do you really need it?
  • Reuse - Can it be used again?
  • Recycle - Can it become something new?

Recycling Frequently Asked Questions

Flattening cardboard allows more product to fit in the bin. If cardboard is not flattened, the bins will fill up quickly and less cardboard is collected for recycling.

Items must be clean and dry to prevent contamination. Contaminated items cannot be recycled. Rinsing helps reduce odours and mould from developing and reduces attracting insects and animals to the bins.

This means that recyclables collected from bins must be clean and separated to avoid cross-contamination. Contaminated recyclable items end up being diverted to the waste pile.

Food and oil from food is one of the worst contaminants in the paper recycling process. If pizza boxes, and food soiled napkins and cardboard/paper are thrown in recycle it will contaminate the other products deeming it non-recyclable and thrown in the waste pile.

Yes, please take these items to the electronic waste area at the County Landfills or Transfer Stations.
