Additions
Expanding the footprint or adding a second storey can add value and usable space to your home. When considering this type of home improvement project, you will need to obtain permits and approvals prior to undertaking the work.
Additions require both a Development Permit and a Building Permit. Depending on the size of the addition in comparison to the original dwelling, you may require new home warranty coverage or an exemption before applying for a Building Permit. As well, all additions must meet the requirements of the National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB) in order to obtain a Building Permit.
You may also require engineered drawings for your foundation, roofing system, or structural details not covered by the Alberta Building Code.
Any mechanical changes would require you to obtain an Electrical Permit, Gas Permit, and/or Plumbing Permit. If you are increasing the number of bedrooms, you may also need to upgrade your Private Sewage system.
