Fire Prevention

Lithium-Ion Battery Safety
Practicing proper lithium-ion battery safety is an important part of fire prevention. Improper use or disposal of these batteries creates a serious fire risk at home and is the leading cause of fires at the Clairmont Centre for Recycling and Waste Management.

About Lithium-Ion Batteries
Lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable power sources found in many devices we use every day. They are lightweight, long-lasting, and have become the most common choice for electronics and equipment.

Lithium-ion batteries can be found in:

  • smartphones
  • tablets
  • laptops
  • power tools
  • electric toothbrushes
  • children’s toys
  • ATVs
  • e-bikes
  • drones
  • and medical devices.

Why Fires Happen
Lithium-ion batteries contain a liquid electrolyte that stores the energy of the battery and is sensitive to improper use and care. Misused batteries can swell, smoke, and possibly catch fire.

If the battery is overheated, damaged or suffers an internal failure, the electrolyte may begin to break down and overheat the cell beyond what it was designed for. This uncontrollable pace of heating is known as thermal runaway.

Once this process starts, it’s difficult to stop. That’s why it’s important to practice battery safety.

Three Steps to Stay Safe

  1. Buy Certified Batteries
Always check for safety marks like CSA or UL Canada on the battery. If it does not have these labels, it is not safe to use.
  2. Charge Properly
Use the charger that came with your device. If you need a replacement, buy one from the manufacturer, not an off brand. Only charge electronics when you’re around to keep an eye on them and avoid charging in extreme temperatures.
  3. Dispose Correctly
Never throw batteries in household garbage or recycling bags. Take them to your local transfer station or the Clairmont Centre for Recycling and Waste Management.
