Curbside Collection

The County of Grande Prairie provides year-round curbside solid waste and blue bag recyclables pick-up.  Waste and recycle is collected weekly with the exception of Christmas Day, New Years Day, and if notified by Prairie Disposal and the County.

Collection Schedule:

Waste or recycling didn't get picked up?

Please contact Prairie Disposal at 780-539-5950.

Bag it

Place bagged waste inside the waste cart. All waste must fit in your waste cart. Additional bagged waste may be accepted if it is accompanied by a County bag tag, which can be purchased at the County Administration and Public Works Buildings. Carts containing unbagged waste may not be collected.

Recyclables can be placed in transparent blue bags and placed curbside (one metre from your waste cart) for pick-up. Read the list of items accepted in blue bags for curbside pickup below.

Close It

Ensure the lid is fully to keep trash from being scattered by the wind and wildlife. A cart with an open lid may not be collected.

Place It

Roll your waste cart to your curbside/street between 6 p.m. the night before and 7 a.m. on your collection day.

When placing your waste cart on your curb, ensure the wheels/handles are facing inward toward your home with the wheels touching the edge of the street or curb.

Be sure there is one metre of clearance on all sides of the cart and full clearance overhead – this includes between the waste cart, parked cars, fences, blue bag recyclables, and trees beside and above. Failure to do so may result in your cart not being emptied.

Helpful Tips

If your household waste items do not fit in your cart, do an assessment of what you are throwing in your garbage and ask yourself: Can it be reduced or recycled? Many of the items in your garbage you may be able to recycle or compost.

Purchase a home composting unit from the County, at a local home and garden store or create your own backyard composting system.

The County of Grande Prairie No. 1’s recycling program is now managed by Circular Materials, a national not-for-profit organization that is committed to building an efficient and effective recycling system in Alberta. Click here to visit Circular Materials’ website for most up to date information.

Please direct all residential inquiries to our collection contractor, Prairie Disposal, at 780-539-5950 or dispatch@prairiedisposal.com.

Glass and large recyclables can be deposited at one of the County’s 13 community recycling bin locations.

Your cart may have been tagged for one or more of the following reasons:

  • The cart was not correctly placed for collection
  • The collector could not grasp the cart due to parked vehicles or other obstructions being too close
  • There was hazardous waste, electronic waste, animal waste, noxious materials, liquids or other prohibited items in the cart
  • The cart lid was not fully closed.

You can dispose additional waste at the Clairmont Centre for Recycling and Waste Management. Visit the Clairmont Centre Access Program page for details about accessing the Centre.

You can also purchase tags for each extra bag of waste. Bag tags will be available for purchase for $5 per tag at the County Administration and Public Works buildings (located at 10001 - 84 Avenue in Clairmont) during regular business hours.

Please call Transportation and Utilities at 780-532-7393.  Replacement bins are $88.

You may dispose of your bagged organic material, grass clippings and garden waste into the waste cart, however, these items may take up more space in your cart than you have room for. If you would like your grass clippings and garden waste collected, simply place it in a clear or blue bag and set it beside your bagged recyclables. Ensure bags set to the side are less than 44 lbs / 22 kg.

Alternatively, the County has a Backyard Organic Diversion Program, where many organic items can be composted or digested in your backyard to prevent it from going into the waste stream at the landfill. Simply build your own compost or purchase a home composting or food digester unit.

Residents who own property in County Rural Estate subdivisions interested in curbside waste and/or recycle collection services are encouraged to work together with residents within their subdivisions as a group to gain acceptance for this program. Such a program requires a curbside collection fee and acceptance by the residents collected via survey before council will approve the service.

If there is strong interest within the community, you are encouraged to send a letter to our Public Works office. The request is then reviewed by council who provide the final decision for the program
