The County of Grande Prairie hosted two information sessions for residents interested in running for County Council in the upcoming 2025 Municipal Election.
Attendees learned about the roles, responsibilities and time commitments involved with being a County Councillor, and were offered an opportunity to ask questions.

The County of Grande Prairie No.1 will be conducting a municipal election on Monday, October 20, 2025, where voters will elect nine (9) Councillors.
Nomination Period
Nomination period: January 1, 2025 to September 22, 2025
Nomination deadline: Monday, September 22, 2025 at 12 noon
New this year, candidates must file a Notice of Intent to Run as a candidate.
Candidates who plan to run in the 2025 municipal election can only accept campaign contributions and incur campaign expenses once their notice of intent to run is complete and they are added to the Register of Candidates.
Your Notice of Intent must be filed in person with the Returning Officer by arranging a delivery time in advance.
The nomination deadline is 12:00 p.m. on Monday, September 22, 2025.

Every nomination of a candidate shall be completed through the submission of:
- Nomination Paper and Candidate's Acceptance (Form 4)
- Candidate Financial Information (Form 5)
- Supplementary Nominations – Additional Elector Signature (optional)
- Authorization for Release of Personal Information
Each nomination form must be fully completed and include the signatures of at least five (5) eligible electors. To ensure validity of nominations, a candidate is encouraged to submit more than the required five (5) elector signatures.
The County does not collect a deposit to file nomination papers.
Nomination Papers can be filed with the Returning Officer by arranging a delivery time in advance prior to 12:00 p.m. on September 22, 2025.

Candidates for the 2025 Municipal Election are required by the Local Authorities Election Act to file their campaign and financial disclosure statements by the dates as listed below:

Reporting period for contributions received between January 1 to July 31, 2025. |
March 1, 2026 |
Reporting period for contributions received between January 1 to December 31, 2025. |
All candidates must submit campaign disclosure statements with the County of Grande Prairie.
Campaign disclosure statements must be filed:
- Even if the candidate had no contributions or expense;
- The campaign was self-funded;
- Whether or not the candidate was elected;
- Even if the candidate has withdrawn their nomination.

If at the close of Nomination Day at 12 noon on September 22, 2025, the number of candidates nominated for any office is the same as the number of required to be elected, the Returning Officer shall declare the candidates to be acclaimed to the offices for which they were nominated.
The Municipal Government Act specifies that elected officials are required to attend orientation at the start of each Council term.
For the purposes of the 2025 municipal election, Council onboarding will begin immediately following the election. The Council orientation/onboarding will contain pertinent information to assist members of Council in carrying out their legislative duties.
The following is a list of orientation sessions currently scheduled. Additional dates will be added once they have been determined.
- October 24, 2025 - Council Orientation Session (Mandatory Attendance)
- October 27, 2025 - Council Swearing-in Ceremony and Organizational Meeting (Mandatory Attendance)
- October 29, 2025 - Regional Orientation Session with George Cuff
