The County of Grande Prairie No.1 will be conducting a municipal election on Monday, October 20, 2025, where voters will elect nine (9) Councillors.

Please note: an updated version of the Candidate Nomination Package will be available by July 18, 2025

The County of Grande Prairie is offering information sessions for residents interested in running for County Council in the upcoming 2025 Municipal Election.

What:            Municipal Government 101

Date:             Wednesday, June 25

Time:             7 pm - 9 pm

Location:        Ovintiv Room at Evergreen Park

A second session will be held on Wednesday, September 3 at the same time and location. There is no need to register.

“This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in becoming a member of Council,” says Carol Gabriel, Returning Officer. “Attendees will learn about the roles, responsibilities and time commitments involved with being a County Councillor, and there will be plenty of time to ask questions.”

New this year, candidates must file a Notice of Intent to Run as a candidate.

Candidates who plan to run in the 2025 municipal election can only accept campaign contributions and incur campaign expenses once their notice of intent to run is complete and they are added to the Register of Candidates.

Your Notice of Intent must be filed in person with the Returning Officer by arranging a delivery time in advance.

The nomination period runs from January 1, 2025 to 12 noon Monday, September 22, 2025.

 Every nomination of a candidate shall be completed through the submission of:

Each nomination form must be fully completed and include the signatures of at least five (5) eligible electors. To ensure validity of nominations, a candidate is encouraged to submit more than the required five (5) elector signatures.

The County does not collect a deposit to file nomination papers.

Nomination Papers can be filed with the Returning Officer by arranging a delivery time in advance.

Candidates for Councillor, or any person acting on behalf of a candidate, are responsible for ensuring they understand all campaign financial rules.

Candidates are encouraged to review Part 5.1 of the Local Authorities Election Act which outlines all campaign finance rules, and seek their own legal advice when needed.

Candidates who have accepted contributions or incurred expenses between January 1, 2025 and July 31, 2025 must file the required campaign disclosure forms by September 30, 2025.

The second disclosure is due by March 1, 2026 for all expenses incurred in the year of the election.

If at the close of Nomination Day at 12 noon on September 22, 2025, the number of candidates nominated for any office is the same as the number of required to be elected, the Returning Officer shall declare the candidates to be acclaimed to the offices for which they were nominated.

The Municipal Government Act and the County of Grande Prairie No.1 Council Code of Conduct Bylaw specifies that elected officials are required to attend orientation at the start of each Council term.

For the purposes of the 2025 municipal election, Council onboarding will begin immediately following the election. The Council orientation/onboarding will contain pertinent information to assist members of Council in carrying out their legislative duties.

The following is a list of orientation sessions currently scheduled. Additional dates will be added once they have been determined.

  • October 24, 2025 - Council Orientation Session (Mandatory Attendance)
  • October 27, 2025 - Council Swearing-in Ceremony and Organizational Meeting (Mandatory Attendance)
  • October 29, 2025 - Regional Orientation Session with George Cuff
