Rural Homelessness

Housing and Service Needs in the County of Grande Prairie

A common myth is that housing insecurity only affects people who are homeless, but in reality, it often impacts people whose struggles are much less visible. Housing insecurity can affect working individuals and families, seniors, newcomers, Indigenous residents and people living in multi-generational households.

Housing insecurity can look like:

    • Spending too much of your income on housing
    • Living in overcrowded or unsafe conditions
    • Staying in a home that needs major repairs
    • Worrying about whether you can continue to afford a place to live

It’s not just about having a roof overhead: it's about having access to safe, stable and suitable housing that supports health, wellbeing and quality of life.

In the County of Grande Prairie and the towns of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith and Wembley, the 2025 Housing and Service Needs Estimation Survey found housing insecurity is driven by factors such as housing affordability, limited rental availability, and health-related barriers
