Voter Identification
Voter Identification (ID) Requirements
Proof of identity and current residence is required to be able to vote in municipal elections. There are two options available to voters.
Option 1 – If your name appears on the permanent electors register
One piece of ID issued by a Canadian government, whether federal, provincial or local, or an agency of that government, that contains a photograph of the person.
For example a driver’s license, and Alberta ID card or a Canadian passport.
Option 2 – If your name is not on the permanent electors register, or you are, but do not have government-issued photo ID
The voter must complete Form 13 Elector Register at the voting station and provide:

One piece of identification issued by a Canadian government, whether federal, provincial or local, or an agency of that government, that contains a photograph of the person, the person’s name and address of the person’s residence.
OR
-
One piece of identification from the list below that contains the person’s name and current address.
OR
- One piece of identification from the list below that contains the person’s name and an eligible voter to vouch, who meets requirements below and completes Form 14 Statement of Voucher.
Forms of Acceptable ID
The following documents are acceptable forms of identification at a voting station if they include their name and current address.
Government-issued Identification
- Alberta Driver’s License or ID Card
- AISH Card
- Alberta Natural Resources (Conservation) Card
- Alberta Wildlife Identification Number (WIN) Card
- Canadian Forces Identification Card
- Canadian Pleasure Craft Operator Card
- Firearm Possession and Acquisition (PAL) Licence
- Fishing, Trapping, or Hunting License
- Government Cheque or Cheque Stub
- Income/Property Tax Assessment Notice
- Letter from a Public Curator, Public Guardian or Public Trustee
- Metis Nation of Alberta Citizenship Card
- Metis Settlement Membership Card
- Outdoors or Wildlife Card/License
- Statement of Government Benefits (e.g. employment insurance, old-age security, social assistance, disability support or child tax benefits)
Other documents
- Bank/Credit Card Statement or Personal Cheque
- Insurance Policy or Coverage Card
- Pension Plan Statement of Benefits, Contributions or Participation
- Residential Lease or Mortgage Statement
- Utility Bill (e.g. telephone, public utilities commission, television, hydro (electric), gas or water)
- Vehicle Ownership, Registration or Insurance Certificate
School, college or university documents

Correspondence issued by a school, college or university
Attestation form
Attestation forms are authorized to be used as a form of identification in the following circumstances:
- A voter who resides in a supportive living or long-term care facility
- A voter who resides in student housing on a campus
- A voters who is an inmate
- A voter who receives services from a shelter or community support centre
- A voter who is renting their ordinary residence
Note: If a voter’s identification shows a post office box number as the address instead of a residential or legal address, it can be accepted as verification of current address if it is in reasonable distance to the voting station. The address does not have to be in the voting division.
Vouching
If the voter does not have acceptable Voter ID with their current address, they may have another voter vouch for them.
That person (the voucher) must:
- Be eligible to vote,
- Have acceptable Voter ID,
- Be listed on the permanent electors register, and
- At the voting station, complete Form 14 Statement of Voucher.
Form 14 Statement of Voucher sets out that the voucher:
- Knows the person,
- Knows the person resides at the address indicated on the statement, and
- Has not been vouched for themselves.
Note:

A voucher may only vouch for more that one person, if the people they are vouching for live in the same residence (one household maximum).

Scrutineers are prohibited from vouching.
